PUT YOUR BODY
IN GOOD HANDS

The Power of Touch

The Art of Healing

What is Osteopathy

Osteopathy is both a science and an art.  It is a form of manual healthcare developed in the 1800's by American Physician Dr. Andre Taylor Still. It promotes, restores and maintains physical, psychosocial, and spiritual health and wellbeing through gentle, personalised assessment and treatment protocols.  The foundation and principles of Osteopathy are best described in this blog post.

It is a comprehensive, holistic manual practice founded on the philosophy that:

  1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of body, mind, and spirit.

  2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance.

  3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated.

  4. Rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the basic principles of body unity, self-regulation, and the interrelationship of structure and function.

Loss of movement and/or function effects the whole body and being, which in turn effects the ability to self-regulate and ultimately health and well-being. Restoration of mobility by removing impeding restrictions restores this innate self-regulating ability.  This brings the system back into balance and provides opportunity for recovery and improved health and well being.

What Do Osteopaths Do?

Classical Osteopathy has a hands on approach to assess and address the root cause of your health problems.

We treat what we find using a vast toolbox of skills and techniques.  We also focus on preventing illness and injury by assessing your life and lifestyle and how it affects your health and well being.  We listen with our ears and our hands about your medical history as well as what and how you describe your home, family, and work. The goal is to understand the interconnectedness of your mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health in order to bring balance to your being.

We view health from a panoramic view and devise a treatment plan to help ease pain, discomfort, and other symptoms, decrease stress, prevent future issues, and help your body engage it's natural healing abilities.

The body is an interconnected system and we use osteopathic treatment modalities to identify and correct the source of the root cause of your health concerns (what we call the area of greatest restriction, which is NOT always the same as the area where your complaint is!) so that you can truly heal and be well.

Osteopathic Wisdom

"Find it. Fix it, and leave it alone."

~ Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, DO

"Any variation from the health has a cause, and the cause has a location.

It is the business of the osteopath to locate and remove it (the cause),

doing away with disease and getting health instead."

~Dr. Andrew Taylor Still DO

“An osteopath is only a human engineer, who should understand all the laws governing his engine and thereby master disease.”

~ Andrew Taylor Still, DO

“To find health should be the object of the practitioner.

Anyone can find disease.”

~ Dr. A. T. Still

"Osteopathy is founded upon and sustained by the laws of nature."

~ Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, DO

Q & A

What can I expect on my first visit?  â€‹

We start by reviewing your health history, your current conditions, concerns, and areas of pain or discomfort as well as determining your treatment goals and expectations.  This can be sitting, standing, walking and/or lying down while fully clothed.

What should I wear?

Non-restrictive loose clothing.  No jeans please if possible!

How Often Should I Come?

This is person and case specific, so it is determined during the initial appointment. This practice strives to promote and facilitate the innate healing response, so the body continues to process, heal and self-regulate after each treatment.  Treatment is cumulative, and regular visits will most likely be required initially to create a lasting change, although the goal of all Osteopathic treatment is to get you better so that you don't need to keep coming back!

What happens in a treatment?

Through gentle non-invasive touch, we assess, find and then treat restrictions using various manual techniques. The goal is to remove whatever restrictions present in the musculoskeletal system, skin, muscles, and fascia, visceral, cranial, and lymphatic systems.  This interconnection allows for the proper circulation, nerve conductivity, and cerebrospinal fluid to be restored. When this is accomplished, the body is then able to self regulate and heal itself.

Is my treatment covered by insurance?

As a member of the the National Manual Osteopath Society, my services are covered under benefit plans that include Osteopathy.  Your provider will be able to confirm this prior to treatment.
